Not understand, if your environment isn’t in good shape, becomes hostile and dangerous, you won’t be able to survive (on your own)?

Why are so many ignorant and reckless with their surroundings, not understanding they deprive themselves of their own livelihood?

It’s stunning and terrifying at the same time, to not have a clear answer to this questions.
