When the ...
Old stuff starts to die … talking about Computer Hardware.
The Hardware itself is kinda okay, it is more because of its age and - in a f###ed up - ignorant - growth oriented - capitalistic economy - where the “new stuff” is more important than life itself - that the drivers for the old hardware aren’t anymore that well supported.
In my case, it is a MacMini (2012), that for sure uses more energy than newer PC Hardware does.
But we don’t count in all the electricity that is used producing the new stuff, shipping it, packaging it, …. and as everything still has to grow like cancer, more often than not, poor quality components are used anyhow, so that the “new, cheap stuff” dies even earlier, because someone has to waste more Resources, to make even more “virtual money” - a vicious death spiral for all life, that still speeds up.
And yes, if the opportunity presents itself, to buy new quality Hardware, I will take it, to safe energy and reuse as much as possible of the old parts, via disassembling it.
We really have to become a “circular economy” very soon, or (Disney’s) “Wall’es trash skyscrapers” will be our new reality.
At least we’ll find shadow, when the temperatures are settling around 35º or more 👻
